Career Summary - Develop and design web applications and web sites. Create and specify architectural and technical parameters. Direct web site content creation, enhancement and maintenance.
Specializations
- Site designers implement and maintain websites using authoring and scripting languages, digital media, content creation and management tools.
- Web masters maintain, augment, or improve existing sites and their pages. They work with Web page designers and system administrators, ensuring that applicable standards such as HTML validity and link liveliness are met. Often they also do user support.
- Internetworking specialists define network architecture, identify infrastructure components, and monitor and analyze network performance. They also design and manage TCP/IP networks.
- Enterprise developers build database and legacy connectivity solutions for Web applications
- E-commerce specialists are experts in standards, technologies and practices in electronic commerce. They manage the relationships among credit cardholders, issuers, merchants, acquirers, payment gateways and third parties.
- Security specialists implement security policy, identify security threats and develop countermeasures using firewalls and attack-recognition technologies.
- Server administrators configure and manage e-commerce infrastructures, including Web servers, FTP, news, and mail servers for mid-size to large businesses.
Training and Education - Knowledge of HTML, XML, DHTML, and Java is the bare minimum for programmers. Experience working with databases or writing in PHP, ASP, or JSP is a big plus. Another language that programmers should know well is English—unlike some of their counterparts in the software industry, most Web programmers need to work closely with non-technical people, and solid communication skills are crucial. Finally, insiders tell us that examples of your work are far more powerful than anything else. If you haven't done any Web work, spend some time building an online portfolio before you go looking for a job in this field.
For designers, being adept at Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, and understanding the basics of HTML will give you a solid foundation to work as a new media designer. Being proficient with a design-oriented HTML authoring tool such as Dreamweaver will help as well.
Getting Ahead - In large firms, people who begin as Web page designers or developers may be promoted to managerial positions, beginning first with managing design teams, advancing to managing an internet site, and moving on to system administrators or as managers of other departments within their firm. Others prefer not to follow the managerial track, which takes people away from the work of programming and into administration. These people prefer to see advancement by changing jobs to work on more exciting projects, at more successful firms, for a higher salary.
Opportunities - All careers that can be found within the Internet sector, are considered among the fastest-growing career fields in the U.S. by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
