While IT career opportunities remain strong here, the trend to move jobs overseas and increase the productivity of workers at home means that the IT Pros who refine and extend their skills through continuing education or certification will benefit from increased job security and wages.
According to MCP Magazine's annual survey, it pays to get certified in many ways:
Job Security - 79% of IT Pros who already have Certifications will continue to seek additional certifications. A typical certification holder has nearly 4 technical certifications and plans to attain a certification every year. 59% said that they feel more secure in their current jobs due to their certifications, 69% feel that technical certifications play at least some role in their job security.
Skills and Knowledge - Increasing skills and knowledge is the important benefit of certification. 65% of certification holders report that a technical certification give them more confidence in the work they perform. 52% report that obtaining a certification improves their problem-solving skills and overall job productivity.
Money - 31% of the certification holders received a job promotion within the first year. In addition, 92% who received a promotion report that their primary certification significantly contributed to that promotion. 43% of the certification holders received an salary raise of $3,487 within the first year of receiving their primary certification. In addition, 80% of certification holders feel that their raise was significantly due to their certification.
Respect - 58% of the certification holders eyed, feel that they get more respect from managers and colleagues due to their technical certifications
